Devon's folk arts development charity Wren Music presents an evening
of powerful, uplifting songs from around the world, from three vocal
ensembles. ComArts Choir
from Elsies River, Cape Town, South Africa, open a window on a particularly
unusual and colourful aspect to their city. The twelve singers specialise
in Moppies - distinctive Cape Malay songs - as well as freedom songs
and African traditional songs. ComArts is a vibrant community organisation,
working with music, song, culture and heritage as tools for social
and economic development. Its work centres on enabling young people
to fully engage in community development through participation and
development of workshop skills. Voices In Common
is Exeter's 30 voice adult community choir. Traditional songs are
at the heart of their repertoire, and local material is mixed with
songs from around the world, as well as newly written pieces. Voices
In Common was established by Wren Music in 1993 to create a wide
range of opportunities for Devon's amateur vocalists of all abilities
to sing with others and to perform in public. Whether they are performing
at arts festivals or out Wassailing around Dartmoor, they set out
to entertain, and to share their enjoyment of singing.
The Exeter-based Campus Choir
gives young people the chance to find their voice, to sing and to
really enjoy making music together. The choir's songs come from
many traditions, including English, Welsh, Swedish, eastern European
and farther afield. Campus Choir is led by two of Devon's new generation
of folk singers from Wren Music: Sarah Owen and Jim Causley. www.wrenmusic.co.uk
