Exeter University Respect Cathedral Concert
A Child of our Time by Michael Tippett, performed by Exeter University Singers, Exeter University Choral Society and Exeter University Scholars Orchestra

Exeter Cathedral, £8/£5/£3, 7.30pm
Soloists: Anneke Freeland and University Music Scholars
Written by Tippett in 1944, 'A Child of our Time' tells the story of Kristallnacht and the first Nazi pogrom against the Jews. He interjects Negro Spirituals into the piece to emulate the Passion Chorales of Bach.
Resonating with Jewish, black and gay communities (Tippett was gay) this work has something to bring to all debates about marginalised groups.
However far from being a depressing experience, written during the Second World War, Tippett created a masterpiece that expresses "no final grieving, but an abiding hope".
Soloist Anneke Freeland is a peripatetic teacher of singing at the University.
